Question
The following questions are for the dehydration of cyclohexanol. (MW = molecular weight) Starting with 2.40 g of cyclohexanol, what is the theoretical yield of cyclohexene in mol (do not add the units to these answers)? What is the theoretical yield in g? The amount of product obtained after the final distillation is 1.57. Assuming that the distillate is pure cyclohexene, what is the % yield of product? If gas chromatography of the distillate showed that the purity of product was 0.720, what is the % yield of pure cyclohexene?Explanation / Answer
Moles of cyclohexanol = Mass/ Molar mass = 2.40 g/100.2 = 0.0239 mol
From the reaction we can see that one mole of cyclohexanol produces one mole cyclohexene
Therefore, 0.0239 mol cyclohexanol produces 0.0239 mol cyclohexene
Now, since moles = Mass/Molar mass
Mass of cyclohexene = Number of moles of cyclohexene x Molar mass
= 0.0239 x 82.1 = 1.966 g
Theoretical yield = 1.966 g
Percentage of yield= (Actual yield/ Theoretical yield) x 100 = (1.57/1.966) x 100= 79.85 %
Here, purity of the product = 0.720
Therefore, percentage yield of pure cyclohexane = 0.720 x 79.85 % = 57.49 %
