Question
8. In this simulation, the reaction generates two products: A B + C At each step, let one-tenth of the A molecules be transformed into B and C. Because B and C need to come together to form A, the fraction that is transformed involves the product of the concentration of B times that of C. Set the fraction of [B] X [C], molecules that are transformed into A molecules to 0.025. Start with 100 molecules of A and 10 molecules of C. What are the equilibrium concentrations? How many cycles does it take to arrive at equilibrium?Explanation / Answer
Initial amount of A = 100 molecules
Initial amount of C = 10 molecules
Initial amount of B = 0 molecules
In the first cycle, (1/10)*100 = 10 molecules of A converted to 10 molecules of B and 20 molecules of C (total C)
Therefore, [B]*[C] = 10*20 = 200 and 0.025*200 = 5 molecules of A is produced.
Number of cycles it takes for A to completely transform into B and C = 10 cycles and in that 10 cycles number of A molecules formed is 50, which takes another 5 cycles and so on.
total cycles = 10 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 18
Therefore, [A] = 5
[B] = 0.1*(100-5) = 95
[C] = 0.1*(100-5) + 10 = 105
