Question
Potassium Permanganate reacting with Cadmium and Arsenic in water:
I have to do a quick design plan for groundwater that has both Cadmium and Arsenic concentrations that need to be remediated. Because I have to oxidize As(3+) into As(5+), I chose to use Potassium Permanganate prior to an ion exchange treatment to remove both pollutants. My question is this: will the Potassium Permanganate react with the Cadmium and effect my dosing if my only goal is to oxidize Arsenic? If so, how can I account for this in my dosing calculations?
Explanation / Answer
When you use molar equivalent of Potassium Permanganate, it will first oxidize Arsenic not Cadmium.
