Question
If you have the same number of moles of salt, which one would be better to use as a roadway de-icer: NaCl or CaCl2? Remember, colligative properties are mole calculations. Show calculations to support your answer and assume both salts dissociate completely. CaCl2 is better to use as a roadway de-icer because it has 3 ions whereas NaCl only has 2. Also based on a mole to mole base CaCl2 is a better to use a roadway de-icer.
NaCl
T = 2 x 0.512/m x1
= 1.024
CaCl2
T = 3 x 0.512/m x1
= 1.536
part B
Based on your data, which salt is more soluble? 11.812g /10 mL = 1.181 g/mL NaCl
9.783g / 10 mL = 0.978 g/mL CaSO4 not sure which one
Explanation / Answer
normal boiling point of NaCl is 101C0
normal boiling point of CaCl2 is 106C0
NaCl is more soluble in water because of solubility of NaCl is more compared to solubility of CaCl2
