Question

Consider the reaction where oxygen is converted into ozone by lightening:
3 O2 (g) ? 2 O3 (g) ?H = +68 kcal/mol and K = 2.68 x 10-29 at 25 degrees C

Explain the following:
a) Is this reaction endothermic or exothermic?
b) Are the reactants of products favored at equilibrium?
c) What do you expect will happen to this system if the supply of O2 is suddenly decreased?
d) What do you expect will happen to this system if the pressure drops suddenly?
e) What do you expect will happen to this system if the temperature increases suddenly?

Explanation / Answer

a) reaction is edothemric since heat absorbed as dH is positive

b) reactants is favored since K value is very low

c) when O2 is decreased more O3 forms O2 hence equilibrium shifts left side

d) Increase in Pressure favours side where less moles present , hence equilibrium shifts in right side of reaction

i.e forward

e) high temperaturefavours endothermic reaction hence forward reaction
