Question

So these questions are from my lab report which focused on EDTA titration of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in various samples of water. some of you might be be familiar with this lab. ANyways, these are some of the questions that i have to answer but im stuck on second part of number 1 and question number 2 as a whole. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

1:Was the endpoint as distinctive for the tap water as for the known Mg2+ solution? What factors might make the endpoint harder to see in the tap water than in the Mg2+ sample?

2:Suppose that you were titrating a sample of sea water, which has substantially higher cation concentrations than are present in fresh water. How would you adapt the titration conditions to accurately titrate this sample with higher ion content?

Explanation / Answer

1. we can see the distinctive color change of the indicator Eriochrome Black T. adding enough indicator is crucial part make sure it is sufficient for producing wine-red color and don't add more than required

2. Tap water hardness is very less compared to the sea water if we use diluted EDTA we can see the sharp end point change.
