Question

A 10.0mL sample of pineapple juice was titrated with 0.100 M sodium hydroxide solution. The average volume of NaOH required to reach the endpoint was 12.8mL.

a. Calculate the number of moles of sodium hydroxide required to reach the endpoint.
b. Using the mole ratio for the neutralization reaction, determine the number of moles of citric acid in 10.0mL of pineapple juice.
c. Multiply the number of moles of citric acid by its molecular weight to calculate the mass of citric acid in 10.0mL of the juice.
d. The concentration of acid in juice is usually expressed in grams of acid per 100mL of juice. What is the concentration of citric acid in pineapple juice?

Explanation / Answer

Volume of Pineapple Juice = 10 mL

Volume of NaOH =12.8 mL

Molarityof NaOH = 0.1 M

Assuming Density of te solution to be 1.0039 g/mL

(a) Weight of NaOH = 1.0039 * 12.8

= 12.84 g

Moles = 12.84 / 40 = 0.32

(b) 3 NaOH (aq) + H3C6H5O7 (aq) -->  Na2C6H5O7 (aq) + 3 H2O

Hence, 3 moles of NaOH are required for 1 mole of citric acid.

Moles of citric acid = 3*0.321

= 0.963

(c) Mass of Citric Acid = 0.963 * 192.124

= 185 g

(d) Concentration = 185 / 10 %

= 18.5 %
