Question
A portion of a titration curve is called the "buffer region". Which of the following best describes the buffer region? Assume the acids and bases are both MONOPROTIC.
Select one:
a. In the titration of a weak acid with a strong base, it is point before any base has been added.
b. In the titration of a weak acid with a strong base, it is the region of the titration curve after some base has been added, but before the equivalence (stiochiometric) volume.
c. In the titration of any acid with any base, it is the region where the titration curve changes most steeply.
d. In the titration of a weak acid with a strong base, it is the region of the titration curve after more than the equivalence (stiochiometric) volume of base has been added.
e. In the titration of a weak acid with a strong base, it is the region where the titration curve changes most steeply.
Explanation / Answer
For this we need to plot graph of of pH vs the volume of base added
we will see the graph first rises steadily and then after a sudden point the ph shoots up indicating the equivalence point is breached. After the equivalence point is breached we see the graph still rising and a little later the bufer region is seen where the ph tends to remain constant (when we have stoichiometric amount of base and salt).
And know that ,for a buffer we need salt of (weak acid +strong base) and strong base to become a basic buffer.
