Question
Explain the effect of each of the following on the precision or accuracy of the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar and Ka for acetic acid. Indicate in each case whether you would expect the experimental results to be falsely high or falsely low.
a. The pipet used to measure the HCl was rinsed only with distilled water before measuring the acid.
b. The dilute vinegar sample was added to a wet beaker.
c. A large air bubble that you did not observe at the beginning of a titration of dilute vinegar was present in the buret tip at the end of the titration.
d. The buret was rinsed with distilled water only before it was filled with the NaOH solution.
Explanation / Answer
(a) we get the results falsely low.
(b) It needs less amount of NaOH than actual, So we get result falsely low.
(c) It makes more requirement of NaOH than actual, Hence we get result falsely high.
(d) Because it is only rinsed with distilled water, the conc. is slightly decreased, henc we get the results falsely high
