Question
As you know, Flybynight Industries has recently opened a chemical reprocessing plant in Oatmeal, Iowa. After an immensely successful start, we are planning for the establishment of the third of the four chemical reprocessing lines at this plant. This line is concerned with the purification of water containing dissolved chemical toxins, byproducts of the chemical processes involved in several industrial applications.
The purification of the water is accomplished by forcing it through the system shown in Figure 1. As it passes through the system, it is exposed to the chemically active surface of the conduit which reacts with the dissolved toxins to produce a solid precipitate. This precipitate is subsequently removed by the three filters shown in the figure.
Because the efficacy of this process is dependent on the (chemically active) surface area of the conduit, we need an accurate assessment of this area. This is the first information we are contracting with you to determine.
Additionally, we are concerned with the energy requirements to force the water through the system. The second item in your contract is to determine the work that will be required of the pump we will use to drive the system. It should be noted that each filter will add to the total work output. The first filter adds 1.0%; the second filter adds 1.5%; and the third filter adds 2.0%. Please include these figures in your final report.
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
using standard formulae for calculating work by height is as,
w = (rho) * g* h { density of water at standard condition is 990}
1st filter --------> w1 = 990 * 9.81 * 5 = 48.559 kJ
2nd filter -------> w2 = 1.5 % w1 = 72.8385 kJ
3rd filter --------> w3 = 2% w1 = 97.118 kJ
