Question
A portion of a two-dimensional "slab" of NaCl(s) is shown here in which the ions are numbered. Which colored balls must represent sodium ions? The larger green balls represent Na^+ cations. The smaller purple balls represent Na^+ cations. This question will be shown after you complete previous question(s). This question will be shown after you complete previous question(s). Consider ion 5. How many repulsive interactions are shown for it? 6 8 2 4 This question will be shown after you complete previous question(s). This question will be shown after you complete previous question(s).Explanation / Answer
Part-A)
NaCl is an ionic molecule consisting of Na+ and Cl- ions formed as follows,
Na(11) 1s2,2s2 2p6, 3s1 transfer its valence elctron to the valence shel of Cl(17) 1s2,2s2 2p6,3s2 3p5 and formation of Na+ (10) 1s2,2s2 2p6 a cation and Cl- (18) 1s2,2s2 2p6, 3s2 3p6 an anion takes place.
We know that cation is always smaller that corresponding atom i.e. Na+ < Na and,
anion is bigger than corresponding atom i.e. Cl- > Cl
Cl- igger than Na+ ion and hence the bigger greenish balls represents Cl- and smaller purple coloured ball represents Na+.
Hence smaller Purple coloured ball represents Na+ion.
Part -D)
In a slab of NaCl,
The ion 5 is a greenish Cl- ion and here shown to be having 4 Repulsive interaction with 4 diagonally placed anathor green Cl- ions i.e. 1, 3, 7, 9 ions.
