Cross sectional study design is used to study the prevalence of a particular disease or event. It establishes association between two variables. It is easy and inexpensive. It provides a snap shot at a particular point in time. It does not establish the casualty.

Longitudinal study designs are used to establish the relationship between causation and effect. It is of two types: case control study and cohort study. Case control study is also called as retrospective study. It proceeds from effect to cause. Cases are compared with controls and odds ratio is determined. It is comparatively easier to do conduct than cohort study.

Cohort study is a prospective study. The study proceeds from cause to effect. Relative risk and attributable risk are determined in cohort study. Cohort study is expensive and conducted over a long period of time.

Randomised control study is an experimental study design. Here, the cases are randomly assigned to two groups, one receiving the treatment and other receiving placebo. The study is conducted according to a predifined protocol. This study design establishes the relationship between causation and effect.
