Question
Adipic acid, C_6 H_8 O_4 H_2, is one of the starting materials used in the production of nylon. It is prepared commercially by oxidation of cyclohexane, C_6 H_12: C_6 H_12+ O_2 rightarrow C_6 H_8 O_4 H_2+ H_2 O Balance the equation for the formation of adipic acid. If 25.0 grams of C_6 H_12 are reacted with 25.0 g of oxygen, how many grams of adipic acid can be produced? Starting with 25.0 grams of C_6 H_12, 33.5 grams of adipic acid is isolated. What is the percent yield of adipic acid in this reaction?Explanation / Answer
a)
balanced equation is
2C6H12 + 5O2 ----> 2C6H8O4H2 + 2H2O
b)
no of moles of C6H12 = 25g / 84.16 g/mol = 0.297 moles
no ofmoles of O2 = 25g / 32 g/mol = 0.78125 moles
from the balances equation 2 moles of of C6H12 and 5 moles of O2 mix and will produce 2 equilent of adipic acid
starting materials are in 2:5 ration so
no of moles of product = no ofmoles of C6H12 = 0.297 moles
weight of the product = moles x molar mass
= 0.297g x 146.14 gr/molw
= 43.40 grams
Part C
the previous problem we got is theritical yield
now % of yield = actual weight / theritical weight x 100
= (35.5 / 43.40) x 100
= 81.8%
