Question

At the AQWA facility in Hillarys, patrons view the marine life while walking through a tunnel formed by a semi-cylinder glass wall. The aquarium contains sea water (Specific Gravity 1.025), and the highest point of the glass wall lies 8 metres below the water surface. If a section of the glass wall is 2.5 metres in radius and 10 metres long, determine the magnitude and direction of the force exerted on the section.

This is Chemical Engineering question (about Hydrostatics/Shell Momentum Balances), please help me to solve it, thanks)

Explanation / Answer

vol of water above glass wall = cross-section of wall * height of water on class wall

                                        = Pie * r^2 * h

                                        =ss/7 * (2.5)^2 * 8 = 157.142

Weight of water above glass wall   =   vol * specific gravity * g

                                                  =   157.142 * 1.025 *9.8   =   161.07 * 9.8   =   1578.486 N

= magnitude of force ofwater above glass wall on glass wall

Force will act in downward direction on glass wall .
