General Chemi Experiment 16: Temperature Change and Equilibria General Chemistry I and Lab Manual Post-Lab Questions 1. Comment on the significance of each of the possible sources of error listed: a. The saturated borax solutions may not show ideal behavior b. 4H' and may not be independent of temperature c. Obtaining the y-intercept requires significant extrapolation 2. For each temperature, calculate Ksp, In Ksp, and 1/T. Plot In Ksp wrsus 1/T as described in he introduction Using linear best-fit lines, obtain the slope and y-intercept values. 1.
a. For a non-ideal solution, dHsoln is not equal to zero. The enthalpy of solution dH thus calculated would be either +ve or -ve depending on the type of bonds to be broken or formed.
b. In case dHo and dSo not independent of temperature, the values of both would be lower or higher depending on the temperature of the reaction. This is according to the relation,
new values with temperature dependence would be
-dHo/T
and,
dS/T
c. The value of y-intercept requires significant extrapolation. The plot being a straight line, the error due to the extrapolation is minimal on the y-intercept value from the graph.
