Review Question for CHE 131 Exam 2 from Spring 2015 Multiple Choice On the Scantron form, bubble in the letter of the one choice that best completes the statement or answers the question. No credit will be given for multiple answers. The following equation shows the reactants and products of a given reaction, C_3H_8 + O_2 implies CO_2 + H_2O how many moles of water will be produced when 0.3818 moles of C_3H_8 and 1.718 moles of O_2 are allowed to react? 1.34 moles 1.37 moles 1.53 moles 1.72 moles 3.43 moles Balance the following equation,

Explanation / Answer

First balance the equation:

C3H8 + 5O2    =   3CO2   + 4H2O

1 mol        5 mol                       4 mol

The ratio 1.718 mol O2 /0.3818 mol C3H8= 4.5 less than the stoichiometric ratio (see reaction equation) 5:1

Thus O2 is the limiting rectant.

The stoichiometric ratio H2O/O2 is 4/5, thus

1.718 mol O2 x 4/5 = 1.37 mol H2O will be formed (answer B)
