14 A Date: Course/Section: Instructor Student name: Team members: Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Prelaboratory Assignment 1. Define the following terms: a. Oxidation-e oss of cletronsLetioion b. Reduction, nu gna of electron ( ,desu c. oxidizing agent. chmal Sfee.ts4mremoves eleden d. Reducing agent-an elmens or o electrons(^^ inlceyeinx.deven to anothe Give balanced equations that are in accord with the following reactions. You will use these reactions to prepare solutions of the halogens. 2. a. The reaction of OCIT (hypochlorite ion) and CI in acidic solution gives Cl2 as the only product containing the halogen. The reaction of BrO)-(bromate ion) and Br in acidic solution gives Br2 as the only product containing the halogen. b 233 Property of Cengage leamingExplanation / Answer
1)
a. Oxidation- Loss of electron(s) by any species.
b. Reduction - Gain of electron(s) by any Species.
c. Oxidizing agent : Acceptor of electrons.
d . Reducing agent : Donor of electrons.
2)
a. Write half reactions,( excluding the O atom )
Cl- -------> Cl2
ClO- ----------> Cl2
Balance the equations in acidic solution
2Cl- -----------> Cl2 + 2e-
2ClO- + 4H+ +2e- ----------> Cl2 + 2H2 O
Add the above two equations & reduce, we get,
Cl- + ClO- + 2H+ ----------------> Cl2 + H2 O
b. Similarly ....................Br- + BrO- + 2H+ ---------------> Br2 + H2 O
&
2BrO3- + 12H+ + 10 e- -----------> 6H2 O + Br2
..................................10 Br- -------------> 5Br2 + 10 e-
Adding up the above two half equations, we get final equation as ,
.........................2BrO3- + 10 Br- + 12H+----------> 6H2 O + 6Br2
c.
2Cu2+ + 4 I- -------------------------> 2Cu I + I2
