Question

For the following redox reaction Cl_2 (aq) + 2 Br^-(aq) rightarrow 2 Cl^- (aq) + Br_2 (aq) Write oxidation half reaction and mention its oxidation number Write reduction half reaction and mention its oxidation number Explain How an element is oxidized or reduced What is the Oxidizing agent? What is the Reducing agent? Potassium permanganate (KMnO_4) is an oxidizing agent. What change (increase or decrease) in the oxidation number of manganese (Mn) must occur? Explain. If oxygen gas oxidizes magnesium metal, what change (increase or decrease) in oxidation number of Mg metal will occur? Write an appropriate half reaction of magnesium metal.

Explanation / Answer

1a. Reduction half reaction:

Cl2 + 2e- -> 2Cl-

Cl goes from an oxidation number of 0 to an oxidation number of -1

1b. Oxidation half reaction:

2Br- -> Br2 + 2e-

Br goes from an oxidation number of -1 to an oxidation number of 0

1c. An element is oxidized when it loses electrons and donates them to another element. An element is reduced when it gains electrons and reduces its oxidation number.

1d. Oxidizing agent is the component that is reduced, in this case, chlorine.

1e. Reducing agent is the component that is oxidized, in this case, bromine.

2a. As manganese is being reduced, the oxidation number must decrease, as it is losing electrons.

2b. Half reaction:

Mgo -> Mg+ + 1e-

The oxidation number of magnesium will increase, as it is being oxidized.
