Question

Are my answers correct If not can you correct them thank you

When several drops of 6M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was added it appears split with yellow layer on bottom and orange layer on top and has a clear color. Should it been all yellow??

CrO42-(aq) + 2H+ (aq) 2 CrO72- (aq) + H2O(l)

(yellow) orange

Which of the species in the above equation does the NaOH react with? NaOH reacts with the hydrogen ions (H+)

Write the NIE for the reaction of NaOH and that species. H+ (aq) + OH- (aq) ----------------> H2O (l)

What is name of that type of reaction? This is a neutralization reaction.

Since that species is reacting with the NaOH, it is being removed from the chromate/dichromate equilibrium. Which direction will the equilibrium shift when it is removed? The equilibrium will shift to the left. is left backwards and right forward?

Do your observations support this conclusion? Explain: Yes my observations support this conclusion because dichromate converted to chromate.

Explanation / Answer

1.The 6M NaOH has been added in drops .Before NaOH is compltely mixed with the solution there will be regions of acid where the solution is orange and regions of base where the solution isyellow.The solution will acquire an uniform yellow color only if the solution is stirred and mixed well and the solution is distinctly basic.

NaOH reacts with the hydrogen ions (H+) - Correct.

H+ (aq) + OH- (aq) ----------------> H2O (l) Correct

This is a neutralization reaction. - Correct

The equilibrium will hift to the left ie in the backward or reverse direction

( Right-Forward direction and left backward or reverse direction)

Yes my observations support this conclusion because dichromate converted to chromate.(The orange solution is turned yellow)
