Question

What is actually happening when you forget to water your houseplants and they wilt? Select one: a. Plant cells' central vacuole is shrinking, decreasing turgor pressure b. Plant cell's central vacuole is expanding, increasing turgor pressure c. There is a net movement of water into the plant cells d. A and C e. They are saddened by your insensitivity to their needs What is the most accurate description of all cell membranes? Select one: a. A layer of phospholipids with some proteins embedded in them b. A layer of proteins with some phospholipids embedded in them c. Two layers of phospholipids with some proteins embedded in them d. A layer of cholesterol with proteins embedded in them e. None of these apply to all cell membranes When a drop of red dye is added to a beaker of room temperature water (think of demo in lab) the dye eventually spread out uniformly in the beaker of water. This process illustrates which type of movement? Select one: a. Active Transport b. Osmosis c. Diffusion d. Facilitated Diffusion e. Oxidation What organelle(s) in eukaryotic cells is/are believed to have evolved from prokaryotic cells Select one: a. Lysosomes b. Mitochondria c. Golgi Apparatus d. Chloroplasts e. B and D Which group of biological molecule is the main component of all cell membranes? Select one: a. Carbohydrates b. Lipids c. Proteins d. Nucleic acids e. DNA

Explanation / Answer

11) Answer is D

If you forget to water your house plants, then they begin to wilt.

Plant cells contain very large vacuole which is a storage compartment for water. In presence of water, vacuole pushes out against the cell wall. This resulting outward pressure is turgor pressure.

In presence of water, its vacuoles swell with water. And the turgor pressure inside each cell is high.

In contrast, when a plant don't get water then use its vacuoles as a source of water.
So, some of the stored water must exit the vacuoles so that it can be used. When the vacuoles are drained, they shrink and thus do not push outward on the cell wall anymore. This lack of turgor pressure causes the plant to wilt.

12) Answer is C

The cell membrane composed of two layers of lipid molecules means the lipid bilayer. The lipid molecules each have a hydrophilic end and a hydrophobic end

13) Answer is C

Diffusion is the movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration. So, when place a drop of red dye in a beaker of water then red dye moved through the water until it was equally distributed throughout the beaker along a concentration gradient.

14) Answer is E

Accordin to endosymbiotic theory, mitochondria and chloroplasts evolved from prokaryotes.

15) Answer is B
