Question

In this experiment, you will be hydrolyzing methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) using sodiumhydroxide. Sodium salicylate will form initially and then upon acidification of the reaction mixture, salicylic acid will formed. This reaction is the reverse of Experiment #27.Infared spectroscopy and melting point will be used to characterize the product Safely goggles are required for performing this lab exercise Minimize the breathing of any vapors and skin contact of chemical reagents. Sodium hydroxide is strongly basic. Wash any skin exposed to sodium hydroxide. Sulfuric acid is strongly acidic. Wash any skin exposed to sulfuric acid Handle any hot lab items with proper protection. Dispose chemical waste according to your instructor's directions. Wash your hands thoroughly when the lab exercise has been completed. Place 4 mLof a 20% sodium hydroxidesolution into a5 - mLvial containing a spin vane.seal 5 - ml vial with 20% sodium hydroxide with green cap with extra orange septum.Weigh and record of 5 - mL with 20% sodium hydroxide. Remove cap from 5-mL vial, add 300 pL of methyl salicylate to the 5-mL vial and seal tightly.(Solids will form, but will dissolve as the vial is heated) Weigh and record weight of 5-mL vial containing methyl salicylate. Place reaction vial in a heat block, pre-heated to 100-105 degree C for 20 minutes with strong stirring. After the 20-minute reaction period, remove 5-ra L vial and allow vial to air cool in the hood to room temperature before opening.

Explanation / Answer

It remains as it is during reaction and removed from reaction mass with washing during workup of reaction.
