Question
Explore Beryllium Phosphate from the Atomic Scale to the Macro Scale Illustrate and discuss the properties of the individual atoms including electron configuration. Present and discuss a method and instrumentation (if needed) to form the compound. Illustrate and discuss the bonding forces and energies of the compound. Discuss the type(s) of bonds of the compound. Discuss the connection and the effect that the atomic and subatomic arrangements have on the mechanical, electrical, and optical properties of the compound. Must show a clear link between scales. Then use the information to discover and discuss current and future applications for the compound.Explanation / Answer
The chemical formulae formulae of Beryllium phosphate is Be3(PO4)2. Hence Beryllium phosphate is composed of Be, P and O atoms.
Be is the smallest element of second group with electronic configuration of 1s2 2S2. During the formation of beryllium phosphate, Be donates 2 electrons to form Be2+ ion. P and O atoms together form the covalently bonded phosphate ion(PO43-).
Beryllium phosphate can be made by mixing ammonium phosphate with Be2+ solution.
Be2+ and PO43- are bonded by ionic bond, where as in PO43-, P and O oxygen atoms are bonded by covalent bond.
