Question
Tell what each term is the following equations: Consider the above diagram with a built in semipermeable membrane as shown: Suppose 0.20 M NaCl is placed in arm A and 0.30 M NaCl is placed in arm B both to the same levels. What would happen to the liquid levels after equilibrium has been reached? Supposed you had used 0.20 M NaNO_3 and 0.10 M CaCl_2, again both to the same levels. Would would happen to the levels at equilibrium? Supposed you had used 0.15 M sucrose and 0.20 M glucose again both to the same levels. What would happen to the levels at equilibrium?Explanation / Answer
i. The level B will be higher because the molecules of water will go from the less concentrated solution to the side of higher concentration.
iii. this case is with non-ionic solid, and is the same compare to case i. The level will rise in the arm of the higher concentration.
ii. case ii is the opposite, the arm A will rise and the B is going to low.
