Question

An electrolytic cell is a type of electrochemical cell in which a reaction is forced to run in a non-spontaneous direction via the application of an external voltage source. One common example of an electrolytic cell is an electroplating apparatus, in which an external voltage is applied in order to cause metal ions to "plate" out of the solution and coat an electrode with a thin layer of solid metal deposited from the solution. In a particular electroplating apparatus, solid nickel is plated onto a metal surface from a Ni2+ solution using a current of 50 amps for 8.0 minutes. What mass of solid nickel will plate out in this time?

Explanation / Answer

Eq wt of Ni+2 = E = atomic Mass/2 =58.7 g/mol

Mass of Ni = (E x i x t)/96500 = (58.7/2 ) x (50 x 8 x60 )/96500

                                            = 7.299 Gram
