Question
An electrolyte is a substance that will conduct electricity when dissolved in water. A substance that conducts electricity well is a strong electrolyte. A substance that conducts electricity poorly is a weak electrolyte. In contrast, a substance that does not conduct electricity when dissolved in water is a nonelectrolyte. Watch the video about the electrolytic properties of sodium chloride, NaCl, and sugar. The student is now told that the four solids, in no particular order, are aluminum chloride (AICI_3), sugar (C_6H_12O_6), benzoic acid (C_6H_5COOH), and potassium bromide (KBr). Assuming that conductivity is correlated to the number of ions in solution, rank the four substances based on how well a 0.20 M solution in water will conduct electricity.Explanation / Answer
AlCl3 ------> Al+3 + 3 Cl-
C6H5COOH -----> C6H5COO- + H+
KBr -----> K+ + Br-
Sugar (s) -------> Sugar (aq)
when AlCl3 dissolves in water then it produces 4 particles, Similarly for KBr gives 2 particles, Sugar gives aqueous sugar particle and Benzoic acid will give 2 particle as shown in above equations.
KBr is strong electrolyte so it is completely dissociated into ions and benzoic acid is weak electrolyte so it dissociate into small amounts.
So number of particles are more then the conductivity is more since all are having same concentration.
So order of conductivity AlCl3 > KBr > C6H5COOH > Sugar
