The compounds we made in lab were colored. Although the color changes may not have been as intense and varied as with the azo dyes, the colors did vary based on the aldehyde and ketone used. Explain why the color changed with different compounds. Note that the reasoning is the same here as it was for the azo dye lab. Backgroud, this lab was an aldol condensation reaction using aldehydes: benzaldehyde, 4-methylbenzaldehyde, 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, and trans-cinnamaldehyde & ketones: acetone and cyclohexanone.

Explanation / Answer

Aldol condensation introduces a double bond in the compound the -C(=O)-C=C or the chalcone obtained from the aldols is chromophoric group to show color similar to the N=N group in the azo dyes. Some starting materials are colored and colored product by the virtue of physical property and the chromophoric group.
