Question
A)
A sample of a gas is in a sealed container. The pressure of the gas is 365 torr , and the temperature is 20 C . If the temperature changes to 63 C with no change in volume or amount of gas, what is the new pressure, P2, of the gas inside the container?
Express your answer with the appropriate units.
B) Using the same sample of gas (P1 = 365 torr , T1 = 20 C ), we wish to change the pressure to 3650 torr with no accompanying change in volume or amount of gas. What temperature T2, in Celsius, is needed to reach this pressure?
Explanation / Answer
A) PV = nRT is equation when V is constant and no gas added then P= constant x T
hence P2/P1 = T2/T1 , P1 = 365 torr = 365/760 = 0.48026 atm, T1 = 20C = 20+273 = 293 K ,
T2 = 63C = 63+273 = 336 K , P2 = ?
P2 / 0.428026 = 336 /293
P2 = 0.55075 atm = 0.55075 x 760 torr = 418.57 torr
B) T1 = 293 , P1 = 365 torr , P2 = 3650 torr
P2/P1 = T2/t1
3650 /365 = T2/293
T2 = 2930 K
T2 = 2930 - 273 = 2657 C
