Please help me with this Psychology questons. Thanks in advance.
The effectiveness of psychostimulants in the short-term is fairly clear, but the long-term effectiveness is not. What evidence is available suggests there is no effect of psychostimulant treatment on academic performance, antisocial behavior, or peer relationships in the long run. Does it change student views on the benefits of medication for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder to recognize that they are only a short-term means of managing behavior with minimal demonstrable long-term benefits? Or are these short-term benefits themselves worth achieving pharmacologically?
Explanation / Answer
Background:Stimulants such as Methylphenidate, are used in the treatment of ADHD are thought to act by increasing brain catecholamine levels and have been used for treating ADHD in children. The stimulants blocks dopamine and nor epinephrine re-uptake transporters but the precise prefrontal cortical and sub cortical mechanisms of action are poorly understood for both methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts.Possible side effects of these stimulants include insomnia, decreased appetite, headache, increased blood pressure and heart rate, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and slowing of growth.
Another well known fact about psycho stimulants is that they have abuse potential. In addition, high doses have been associated with compulsive behaviors and, in certain vulnerable individuals, movement disorders.

Answer: Most of the clinical studies conducted on psychostimulants and their effectiveness in treatment of ADHD has been short term, probably lasting from 3 months to a year. During this time , the data gathered reveals that the stimulants are able to improve core symptoms but do not have any improvement on academic performanace, antisocial behaviour or peer relationships. This may be due to many other factors that bring about this behaviour including family background, mineral deficiencies,etc.. This information according to my view/opinion shows that much more research is required which should involve a longer term of study and include multiple treatment options in conjunction with Psychostimulants. Short term effects which are achieved pharmacologically may appear as relief but this does not provide a long lasting solution which the medical field is always striving for. The wellbeing of the patient is what is most important but in the case of ADHD,not only the patient but also the family and society as a whole will be impacted and therefore short term solutions will not work. The short term pharmacological effects may actually impair the individual and might lead to substance abuse.
