Question

A chemical engineer is studying the two reactions shown in the table below. In each case, he fills a reaction vessel with some mioture of the reactants and products at a constant temperature of 47.0 degreeC and constant total pressure. Then, he measure the reaction enthalpy DeltaH and reaction entropy DeltaS of the first reaction, and the reaction enthalpy DeltaH and reaction free energy DeltaG of the second reaction. The results of his measurements are shown in the table. Complete the table. That is, calculate DeltaG for the first reaction and DeltaS for the second.

Explanation / Answer

(1)

delta G = delta H - T delta S

= -1237 kJ - (273.15+47) K x (-3864 J/K )

=-1237 kJ +1237.059 kJ

= 0.059 kJ

tHIS IS POSITIVE VALUE, SO REVERSE REACTION IS SPONTANEOUS

(b)

delta G = delta H - T delta S

-9 kJ =1353 kJ - 320.15 K x (delta S)

delta S = 4254 J/K

delta G is negative. So this reaction is spontaneous
