Question

Calculate the folowing for each determination of your 5 experiments:

(a) number of moles of H+ initially present

(b) number of moles of OH- initially present

(c) number of moles of H2O produced

(d) temperature change

(e) heat released during the reaction

(f) enthalpy of neutralization

Data from Experiment 1: 50mL 1M HCl & 50mL 1M NaOH, initial temperature was 22C and final was 26.6C.

So far, I have calculated the moles of H+ and OH from 50 mL 1M HCl and 50mL 1M NaOH.

Example (1): 50mL x 1L/1000mL x 1M = 0.05 mol H+

Explanation / Answer

(a) Number of moles of H+ = Number of moles of HCl (since HCl is a very strong acid)

=> Molarity (M) * Volume of solution(L)

=> 50/1000 * 1M

=> 0.050 moles of H+

(b) Number of moles of OH- = Number of moles of NaOH(since NaOH is a very strong base)

=> Molarity (M) * Volume of solution(L)

=> 50/1000 * 1M

=> 0.050 moles of OH-

(c) HCl + NaOH ------- NaCl + H2O

Number of moles of H2O produced = 0.050 moles (since number of moles of HCl = number of moles of NaOH = 0.050 moles)

(d) Temperature change = 26.6C - 22C = 4.6C

(e) Heat released in the reaction

=> mass * specific heat capacity of water * (change in temperature)

=> 0.05 * 18 * 4.18 J/gC * (4.6C)

=> 17.3052J
