Question
Three students carry out a chemistry lab where each is to collect the solid product (precipitate) from a chemical reaction. Student 1 collects 0.246g of solid, Student 2 collected 0.318g, and student 3 collected 0.229g. Calculate the average mass of solid collected by the students. Show all calculations and consider which method of calculating average would be most appropriate to use.

In Chemistry class, students were asked what size of groups they'd prefer to work in. One quarter of the students preferred to work by themselves (group 1), one quarter of the students preferred to work in pairs (groups of 2), and one half of the students preferred groups of 3. Calculate the average preferred group size and round to the tenths place. Show all calculations and consider which method of calculating average would be most appropriate to use.
Explanation / Answer
Average Mass of Solid = (Student1 reading + Student 2 reading + Student 3 reading)/3
=> (0.246+0.318+0.229)/3
=> 0.264 gms
Average group size = Percentage preference * group size
=> 1/4 * 1 + 1/4 * 2 + 1/2 * 3
=> 0.25 + 0.5 + 1.5
=> 2.25
Hence the average group size will be equal to 2.25
