Question
For each of the following problem statements, identify: (i) is it a batch, semi-batch or continuous process? (ii) steady-state or unsteady state (transient flow)? (iii) is there a reaction? and (iv) simplify the general balance equation for the process using these assumptions.
(a) Waste products from oil sands production are discharged into a tailings pond that is open to the atmosphere.
(b) In a given plant, excess acid is fed into a vessel where it is neutralized by a base before its discharge. The acid flows in at a rate of 10 mol/min and the resultant water and salt (full conversion) are removed at a rate of 5.0 mol/min.
(c) A mixture of pentane and hexane enter a separation vessel. Of the two exit streams, the overhead product stream contains 40 kg/h of pentane with a hexane mass fraction of 30%.
(d) A 50.0 m3 production tank is half full with olive oil. Fresh olive oil is fed into the tank at a rate of 60.0 kg/min and is withdrawn to fill olive oil bottles at 30.0 kg/min.
(e) Wood chips are added to a vessel with alkaline solution. After 30 minutes, the resultant slurry (solution + undissolved cellulose) are removed from the vessel.
Explanation / Answer
(a) is continous process
(b) there is a reaction
(c) is steady-state
(d) is batch process
