6. Separation of 50/50 benzoic acid and biphenyl
The component is the ether layer will be biphenyl. On addiiton of 5% NaOH solution, benzoic acid reacts with the base and forms ionic sodium benzoate, which is soluble in water. Biphenyl does not react with NaOH and Remained in ether layer.
7. Aqueous layer has sodium salt of benzoic acid. The salt is acidified and reformation of benzoic acid occurs from the aqueous layer. The precipitate thus formed by addition of 6 M HCl is benzoic acid.
8. Bromobutane being the heavier (higher mass) compound will have higher boiling point as compared to lower molecular mass chlorobutane.
