Question

Everything in the following picture is correct except for change the ADP= .30 mM to .80mM and then solve. Thank You!

A critical reaction in the production of energy to do work or drive chemical reactions in biological systems is the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate, ATP, to adenosine diphosphate, ADP, as described by ATP(aq)+H2O(l) ADP(aq) + HPof (aq) for which Gnn--30.5 kJ/mol at 37.0°C and pH 7.0. Calculate the value of Grxn in a biological cell in which [ATP] = 5.0 mM, [ADP] = 0.30 mM, and [HP042-1-5.0 mM. Number AG- kJ mol rxn Is the hydrolysis of ATP spontaneous under these conditions? O yes O no

Explanation / Answer

Given:

ATP(aq) + H2O(l) <=> ADP(aq) + HPO42-(aq)

Temperature T = 37.0 deg C = 310.15 K

Molar gas constant R = 8.314 x 10^(-3) kJ/mol.K

Gorxn = -30.5 kJ/mol

Reaction constant k = [ADP][HPO42-] / [ATP]

= [0.40 x 10^(-3) x 5.0 x 10^(-3)] / 5.0 x 10^(-3)

= 4.0 x 10^(-4)

Grxn = Gorxn + RT ln k

= -30.5 + 8.314 x 10^(-3) x 310.15 x ln(4.0 x 10^(-4))

Grxn = -50.67 kJ/mol

Grxn is negative. Therefore, hydrolysis of ATP is spontaneous under these conditions.
