Question

Using the following procedural outline: answer the question below.  "In an Erlenmeyer flask dissolve 0.5 g of E-stilbene in 10 mL acetic acid. Warm the mixture in a hot water bath until the solid has dissolved, then add 1 g of pyridinium hydrobromide perbromide. Rinse any crystals of reagent from the sides of the flask with a little acetic acid, then continue to heat for 1-2 minutes.  Stilbene dibromide will precipitate almost immediately as small plates. Cool the mixture under tap water before collecting the product by vacuum filtration. Wash with a small amount of ice cold methanol and continue to dry the isolated solid for a few minutes. Press the crystals with a spatula if necessary to achieve maximum drying.  Determine the yield, percent yield and m.p. of your product. You should obtain about 0.8 g of stilbene bromide with an expected m.p. range of 236-237oC."

QUESTION:

A) What is the theoretical yield of dibromide product in the bromination reaction?

Explanation / Answer

Molecular weight of E-stilbene = 180 g

Molecular weight of stilbene dibromide = 340 g

E-stilbene ----------------> stilbene dibromide

180 g 340 g

0.5 g ?

? = (0.5 g/ 180 g) x 340 g stilbene dibromide

= 0.94 g stilbene dibromide

Therefore,

theoretical yield of stilbene dibromide = 0.94 g
