Question
Conceptual Connection 4.4 Nitrogen dioxide reacts with water to from nitric acid and nitrogen monoxide according to the equation: 3NO_2(g) + H_2O(iota)rightarrow2HNO_3(iota) + no(g) Part A Suppose that 5.0 mol no_2 and 1.2 mol h_2o combine and react completely. Which reactant is excess? Express your answer as a chemical formula. Part B How many moles of the reactant in excess are presort are present after the reaction has competed? Express your answer using two significant figures. Part A Suppose that 5.0 mol no_2 and 1.2 mol h_2o combine and react completely. Which reactant is excess? Express your answer as a chemical formula. Part B How many moles of the reactant in excess are presort are present after the reaction has competed? Express your answer using two significant figures.Explanation / Answer
Given reaction
3 NO2 + H2O ---------> 2 HNO3 + NO
From this balanced equation , we can say that
For every 1 mole of H2O , 3 moles of NO2 is required.
Hence,
For every 1.2 moles of H2O , 1.2 x 3 = 3.6 moles of NO2 is required.
But we have 5 moles of NO2.
Therefore, NO2 is in excess.
Excess no of moles of NO2 = 5 - 3.6 = 1.4 moles
