Question
What are your opinions about being able to choose the sex of your child ? Would you use technology to help you make such a choice ? FYI- Sex determination is legally banned in India as male child is preferred over female child because male child is able to pass on family last name for generations to come and also to do last rituals of parents at the time of their death. However, now things are now changing there too A woman comes to know the sex of child after her delivery- a big surprise for 9 months.
Explanation / Answer
Gender selection is an idea that was initially used to help parents to avoid passing genetic disease to their children, but it is increasingly used to help couples to achieve a family balance between boys and girls, but practically it wouldn’t be possible. We don’t know whether the coming child is male or female. If people were to choose, there could be a massive effect on the gender balance in the population. If too many males were birthed then there will be an imbalance in gender ratio. The same would happen if too many females were birthed. There are people out there who would love to have a child and unfortunately can't and then there are others too who are lucky enough to be able to have children and yet are still 'picky' about the sex of their child. There is no 'right' to choose your child's sex, because doing so harms society, and May well harm the child and the rest of the family. If you are not prepared to accept and parent either a boy or a girl, you should not be a parent. The creation of a new life is the most morally serious thing you can do. We must not let it become just another consumer choice.
