Interaction Strength

(Pw - Pwo)/C

1. Define interaction strength and describe how it is useful to our understanding of communities.

2. Describe how you would calculate the interaction strength of sea otters on sea urchins.

3. Why are keystone species usually top predators? (include the definition of a keystone species in your answer)

4. Describe how you would calculate the interaction strength of grass on grazers. What would you need to measure?

5. Why are numerical dominants usually primary producers?

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

1. Define interaction strength and describe how it is useful to our understanding of communities.

2. Describe how you would calculate the interaction strength of sea otters on sea urchins.

Sea otters eat mostly invertebrates including sea urchin. One way of calculating the interaction strength without performing an experiment will be to determine the amount of sea urchins consumed by sea otter and calculate its percentage representation. If relatively large amount of sea urchin is found in the stomach of Sea otter, that would indicate strong sea Otter - sea Urchin interaction.

3. Why are keystone species usually top predators? (include the definition of a keystone species in your answer)

Keystone species have high per capita interaction strength and their effect is significantly large and disproptionate relative to its abundance.

4. Describe how you would calculate the interaction strength of grass on grazers. What would you need to measure?

Interaction strength of grass on grazers can be determined by excluding grazer from the community and determine the effect on grass abundance in the absence of grazer. Per capita interaction strength can then be calculated by determining the sporeling density in the absence and presence of grazer.

5. Why are numerical dominants usually primary producers?

Primary producers produce biomass and take energy from abiotic resources. Dominant species are usually recognized based on their numerical abundance.
