Question

The potential of the cell is 0.312 V at 25 oC. What is the pH of the electrolyte solution? Assume partial pressure of H2 is 1 bar and the chloride ion spectates (its oxidation number is unchanged). The potential of the cell is 0.312 V at 25 oC. What is the pH of the electrolyte solution? 1.) The potential of the Pt s)H2(g)HCl(aq)IAgCl(s)JAg(s) cell is 0.312 V at 25 C What is the pH of the electrolyte solution? Assume partial pressure of H is 1 bar and the chloride ion spectates (its oxidation number is unchanged).

Explanation / Answer

The electrode reaction for this hydrogen electrode is 2H+(aq) + 2e --------- H2(g)   E0H+/H2 = 0

Electrode potential of hydrogen electrode is given by E0H+/H2 = E0H+/H2 - 0.0591/2 log 1/[H+]2

E0H+/H2 = 0.321V given

Therefore, 0.312 = - 0.0591/2 (-2log[H+]) = - 0.0591 pH Because, (-log[H+] = pH)

Hence, pH = 0.312/0,0591 = 5.279
