Question
Suppose you set up electrochemical cell to initiate Cu deposition on an inert noble metal (e.g. Pt) cathode. Assuming that the counter-electrode reaction is the evolution of O2 gas from water, also at a Pt surface, a .010M CuSO4 solution is used as the copper source in the working electrode compartment and 0.050M KHP is used as the electrolyte medium in the counter-electrode compartment:
a. Show the line diagram of the complete electrochemical cell.
b. Write the 2 half-cell reactions and corresponding Nernst expressions with SRPs.
c. Assuming O2 gas is being evolved at 390 Torr in the counter-electrode compartment and given the other cell conditions as above, compute the 2 half-cell potentials.
d. Express the above potentials on the SCE reference scale.
e. Compute the cell voltage.
Explanation / Answer
Anode 2H20 --> O2 + 4H+ + 4e
Cathode Cu+ + e --> Cu
