Question
hi all I have question ! is there different between recrystallization and crystallization plz do not give me their definitions no I want to know if both methods are used to purify our product by test different solvents ??! they are different names only?also if I will use Benzene as solvent is there any issues if I am follow the article and they use Benzene as solvent !! becuse I asked our lab manager but really he say no it is hazard and bla bla bla !!! I want to know if someone ask me about benzene as solvent on Recrystallization what why can not use it !! hi all I have question ! is there different between recrystallization and crystallization plz do not give me their definitions no I want to know if both methods are used to purify our product by test different solvents ??! they are different names only?

Explanation / Answer
Crystallization is usually the name of the technique to separate any solid by precipitation from a solution. For instance if you are running a reaction and one of the products is a solid and precipitates from the mixture, you are crystallizing (precipitating) the solid, even if you cool down the solution or use another tricks to form a solid.
The recrystallization is the name given to the technique for purifying a solid. As the prefix ¨re¨indicates, you dissolve in the minimum amount of hot solvent required and then allow to cool slowly (sometimes is needed a hot filtering) to get new crystals free of any impurity.
Then the main difference between the two terms is that when you cristallize or precipitate a solid you usually do not get a pure solid (it can be a mixture of solids in fact) while when you do recrystallization you do it with the aim of purify the crystals and get a pure solid.
About the benzene as recristallization solvent it is correct the advice of your lab manager. Nowadays benzene it is known as a carcinogen and mutagenic solvent. It is also a highly flammable liquid and irritant. Check the year of your article and try to find an actuallized method of recrystallization, for sure you can find a more healthy friendly solvent to recrystallize your solid. Remember you can use mixtures of solvent in case you do not find a single solvent. Benzene can be repalced by toluene or cyclohexane which are less hazardous solvents.
LEt me know if you have any doubts :)
