Question
Ethane is chlorinated in a continuous reactor according to C_2H_6 + Cl2 rightarrow C_2H_5Cl + HCl Some the monochloroethane product is further chlorinated in the undesired side reaction C_2H_5Cl + Cl_2 rightarrow C_2H_4Cl_2 + HCl The reactor is designed to yield a 20 % conversion of the ethane with a selectivity of 14 for the monochloro species relative to the dichlorospecies, with complete consumption of the chlorine. Calculate the required chlorine flow rate if the ethane feed is 100 moles/min.Explanation / Answer
There is total 20% conversion of ethane, Thus for 100 molesof ethane there would 20 moles of chlorinated product.
Out of these 14/15* 20=18.67 mol is monochlorinated product whereas 1/15*20 = 1.33 mol is dichlorinated products.
Thus number mole of Cl2 required = 1*18.67 mol + 2*1.33 mol = 18.67 + 2.66 = 21.33 mol
The required chlorine rate should be 21.33 mol / min.
