Question
A student carried out the experiment but did not follow the directions exactly as written. What effect would the following actions have on the experiment? a. The student took a sample of the vinegar with a 5-mL volumetric pipet and then emptied all the liquid into an Erlenmeyer flask by blowing out the sample. b. Air was not excluded from the buret when it was filled with NaOH solution. An initial buret reading was taken; then during the titration, the air bubble came out. When the titration reached the end point, a final reading was taken. c. The titration went to a purple end point.Explanation / Answer
a ) The pipette has been callibrated to deliver appropriate amount of solution with some remaining in the tip. By blowing , the extra amount of solution is added.Blowing also couses the bubble in erlynmayer flask which couses incorrect dilution.
b ) Some time this air bubble stucks in the burette & some time it flows with NaOH solution & due to this we have no idea what was real volume of solution is used.
c) More amount of NaOH is added to solution of vinegar ie overly titrated.
