Question

Calculate the standard free energy of the following reaction from standard free energies of formation. 2 CO (g) + O_2 (g) rightarrow 2 CO_2 (g) 5. The vaporization of bromine requires 31.0 kJ/mol and an increase in disorder (DeltaS' = 93.0 J (molmiddotK)At what temperature will this process be spontaneous? Br_2 (I)rightarrow Br_2 (g) 6. Calculate the standard free energy for the following reaction producing glucose. 6 CO_2 (g) + 6 H_2() (I) rightarrow C_6 H_12 O_6 (s) + 60_2(g) Copper (I) sulfide reacts with sulfur to produce copper (II) sulfide under standard conditions. The process is exothermic (DeltaH = -26.7 kJ mol) with a decrease in disorder (DeltaS' = -19.7 J (mol K)). Determine the spontaneity of the reaction by calculating DeltaG". C_u2S(s) + 2 S (s) rightarrow 2 CuS (s)

Explanation / Answer

I have solved the first two problems, post one more question to get the remaining answers

4)

2CO(g) + O2(g) ----------- 2CO2(g)

Enthalpy of Reaction = 2 * Enthalpy of CO2(g) - 2 * Enthalpy of CO(g)

=> 2 * (-393.5) + 2 * (110.5)

=> -566 KJ/mol

5) The reaction will become spontaneous when Delta G will be less than zero

Delta G = Delta H - T Delta S

Delta G = 31000 - 93 * T

T > 31000/93 = 333.33

Hence the minimum temperature will be 334K
