Question
Calculate the molar mass ofCO_3^-2 b. Determine the % (by mass) of carbonate in CaCO_3. In this experiment, you will conduct two different chemical reactions (see below). Some of the moles of HCI you add will react with calcium carbonate in the first reaction and the rest will react with sodium hydroxide in the second reaction. i. CaCO_3 (aq) + 2 HCI (aq) rightarrow CaCl_2 (aq) + C0_2(g) + H_20 (I) ii. HCI (aq) + NaOH (aq) rightarrow NaCI(aq) + H_20(1) If you use 0.502 mol HCI (total) and 0.252 mol NaOH in this experiment, answer the following: a. How many moles of the HCI react with NaOH? b. How many moles of the HCI react with CaCO_3? c. How many moles of Ca_2CO_3 react with the HCI? How do you know if your antacid solution is acidic? Basic?Explanation / Answer
3. a. In the reaction (ii), we can see that 1 mol of HCl reacts with 1 mol of NaOH. So, 0.252 mol of NaOH will react with 0.252 mol of HCl.
Moles of HCl reacted with NaOH = 0.252 mol
b. Rest of the moles of HCl will react with CaCO3.
Total moles of HCl = 0.502 mol
Moles of HCl reacted with NaOH = 0.252
Moles of HCl remaining = 0.502-0.252 = 0.250 mol
These moles will react with CaCO3. Moles of HCl reacting with CaCO3 = 0.250 mol
c. In reaction (i), 2 mol of HCl react with 1 mol of CaCO3.
So, 0.250 mol of HCl react with CaCO3 = 0.250/2 = 0.125 mol
Moles of CaCO3 reacting with HCl = 0.125 mol
4. To determine if antacid is acidic or basic experimentally, then we need to dissolve the antacid tablet in distilled water. Then measure the pH of the solution by litmus paper or pH probe. If the pH is more than 7, it is basic and if it is less than 7, it is acidic. For litmus paper, if it turns red, it is acidic and if it turns blue, it is basic. For the antacid, the pH will be more than 7, as it is basic. And it is used for acidic problems. By taking antacid, it neutralises the acidity in stomach being basic in nature and solve the problem.
