Question

For each of the salts on the left, match the salts on the right that can be compared directly, using Ksp values, to estimate solubilities.

(If more than one salt on the right can be directly compared, include all the relevant salts by writing your answer as a string of characters without punctuation, e.g, ABC.)

Write the expression for K in terms of the solubility, s, for each salt, when dissolved in water.

iron(III) hydroxide

barium sulfate

1. iron(III) hydroxide                          A. Ag3PO4 2. barium sulfate B. AgCN C. AgCl D. Ca3(PO4)2

Explanation / Answer

1) Fe(OH)3 gives Fe3+ and 3OH- , hence 4 ions

Hence Fe(OH)3 can be compared to compound which gives 4 ions , which is Ag3PO4 ( 3Ag+ and 1PO43-)

BaSO4 gives Ba2+ and SO42- ions hence 2 ions

Hence it can be compared to AgCN and AgCl

Hence 1- A

2-B, C

now   for Fe(OH)3 the Ksp = [Fe3+] [OH-]^3 = (S) ( 3S)^3 = 27S^4

Ksp = 27 S^4   ( where S is solubility)

BaSO4   ,   Ksp = [Ba2+][SO42-] = S x S = S^2

Ksp = S^2
