Question
You've been following the progress of your reaction by TLC, spotting your starting material in the left-hand lane, your reaction mixture in the right-hand lane, and a co-spot in the center. However, after taking a few TLCs, you drop your plates, mixing up the order! List the letters of the plates above in chronological order (earliest plate first). Which is more polar, your starting material or the product? Did the reaction go to completion (i e. was all of the starting material consumed in the reaction)?Explanation / Answer
a) As you are carrying out a reaction the starting material should diminish. SO the order is A, C and B as the amount of product is larger in B as compared to the starting material compared to C.
b) The starting material is more polar than the product as it does not move in the conditions used for the TLC whereas the product has an Rf of about 0.7.
c) The reaction did not go to completion as the starting material is still visible in the spot at the origin in B which is the final TLC.
