Complete this table by calculating the average density by each group etc... Q#7 when this page came up here as I type. Antway I get avgs of 11.4, 11.4333, and 11.1. How do I enter the avg in the ans block for 11.4333 since it's probably too mant decimal sig figs and all numbers to avg were given with two sig figs and I need to further ansers the Q's on %erro, precision and accuracy. Please advise.

Explanation / Answer

Here apply the rules of rounding, if we are rounding of an whole number

1) if the number we are rounding off is followed by 5,6,7,8,9 round the number up to the nearest tens. for example 18 is rounded of to 20

2) if the number we are rounding off is followed by 0,1,2,3,4round the number up to the nearest tens. for example 43 is rounded of to 40

The same rule is followed by the fraction as the whole number. But the difference is we don't round to tens, hundreds or thousands instead we follow the given rule:-

1) if the digit immediate to the last of the significant figure is greater than 5 or equal to five(5,6,7,8,9) than we add 1 to the last significant digit. This is called rounding up. For e.g 15.325 suppose we have to write upto too two sinificant digit its been round of and written as 15.33

2) if the digit immediate to the last of the significant figure is less than five (0,1,2,3,4) we leave the digit we want to round as alone. And all the digits followed by that number becomes zero or simply we can say drop off. this is called rounding down. for e.g 27.823 round upto two significant figure we will right it as 27.82

so your question which is 11.4333 has to be round upto 2 significant figure would be 11.43
