Question
Regarding "Population Growth & Regulation": (Arthropoda) 1) Then in a 1" paragraph, discuss using terminology the means of additions & subtractions to a population. 2) In a 2nd paragraph, discuss the concept(s) illustrated by the figure. 3) Finally, in the form of 2 labeled list, identify the 2 groups that organisms can be placed in based on their typical form of population growth & regulation. Under each label give typical characteristics that define each group & then give example organisms for each group. Grading will be based on following instruction, use of terminology and completeness of discussion.Explanation / Answer
1) immigration - addition to a population; emmigration - substraction from a ppopulation.
2) The figure describes the two models for growth rate:
Logistic growth curve describes the growth rate of a population where the sources are limiting and the environment has a carrying capacity, K which means that the environment can support only a limited number of individuals.
Exponential growth curves is followed by the population where the sources are unlimited and the environment doesnt have a carrying capacity, K.
3) Organisms that follow logistic model of growth are called K-forms and the ones that follow the exponential species are called r-forms. They differ in characteristics as follows:
-
Characters r-forms K-forms Environment Variable, unpredictable COnstant, predictable, stable Mortality Density dependent directed, density dependent Survivorship curve type III type I and II Population size below carrying capacity K; variable in time at or near K; constant in time life span short, long examples bacteria, rodents, weed mammals, birdsRelated Questions
