Question
PRELAB ASSIGNMENT 6 Redox Titrations Name Date TA You will need to construct a flowchart or write out a procedure for the experiment as explained in the lab syllabus. This must be handwritten. The specific instructions are given again on the following page. After completing your flowchart/procedure, please answer the following questions and turn them in with your flowchart/procedure 1. What color do you expect your post -titration solution to bei Propose an explanation for why the solution is warmed in Part Il of the Experimental Procedure. 2. Remember that this prelab assignment must be turned in as soon as you walk into the lab room. You will not be permitted to do the experiment if this assignment is not done Experiment 6: Redox Titrations 67Explanation / Answer
Procedure :
1) Determine the concentration of KMnO4solution by taking 50 mL of it into buret with precautions and
in flask add 30mL of 3M H2SO4 to 75 mL distilled water, this will be the acidic solution.
2) Weigh 0.5 gm of Mohr's salt and add it to the acidic solution and start titrating the solution, continue
to do so until pink color is observed. Make sure to note down the end-point upto significant figures.
Use a stirring rod in order to ensure proper mixing of salt.
3) Now determine the concentration of unknown sample of sodium oxalate by weighing 0.5 gm of the unknown
sample and adding it to the acidic solution prepared freshly.
4) Heat this solution upto 70oC and start the titration and continue until a pale pink color is observed.
Notedown this volume. The color changes from purple to colorless and then to pale pink.
Post - lab questions:
1. Mn+7 reduces to Mn+2 in this redox titration hence the intense pink can be observed at the end-point.
However post titration solution will be colorless as the exchange of electrons in the redox reaction is over.
2. To increase the extent of reaction i.e) for better and effective interaction of reactants temperature is
raised to 70oC, which is an observed ideal temperature for this redox titration.
